OK...so what else is going down in the world of sport(particularly from a UK viewpoint)? Well here's the...

STATE OF PLAY

So where do I start? Ah...I know where - LONDON GOT THE 2012 OLYMPICS! Absolutely class! There's admittedly a lot of work to be done but we've got seven years to do it in and though we MIGHT screw it up there's no reason why we should. So OK, I'm an optimist, it's just that the idea of the Olympics in my home city is kinda cool OK?

So...in the meantime - what's happening?

Well Paula Radcliffe prevented the 2005 Athletics World championships in Helsinki from being a complete disaster for the UK and the fact that all the hostshots from the 90s have retired and a load of our current hotshots got injured hasn't done us any favours either. However I still came out of that championship feeling that we could do better.

The rugby union scene isn't looking much better either. Two years after winning the World Cup in Oz, the England rugby team made a mess of the 2005 Six Nations under coach Andy Robinson and his predecessor Clive Woodward made a mess of the Lions Tour of New Zealand. The main British Isles rugby Power at the moment appears to be the Grand Slamming Welsh side but on this side of the Severn we do need to get our act together.

Tennis is a hit a miss situation. On the one hand we appear to have Tim Heman and Greg Rusedski on their way out with fast fading form but then we've got this Scottish rookie Andrew Murray breaking into the top 100. I'm still not sure he's got the stamina to handle a five setter yet but at least it means Tim and Greg have someone to hand the batton to.

Guess that'll be it for the time being.
