LEWIS WINS AGAIN!
Spa, well I think every F1 fan knows what that circuit's like. Interesting weather and very interesting racing. And more recently it has become known as the circuit that hosts the first Grand Prix after F1's new "summer break". And it was one of those years when it looked as though it would play an important part in the title race. For a while it looked as though my guys would be running the show. However the Red Bulls were always going to have other ideas and the dream turned to dust when Webber won in Hungary. Still, there was plenty of time to go and both of my guys were still in the picture - now was the time to start the fightback.
First up was qualifying...well that was interesting. OK, the Brits both made it through but the guys driving for the new teams actually looked halfway competitive for once, incidents like Petrov spinning on his outlap helping their cause. The new teams went no further than Q2 though but then again neither did Schumacher - again! The Brits both made it to Q3 for the first time since Germany though. Lewis was the first guy to get a lap in Q3 but he was quickly hammered by Webber and with everyone dodging rain from there on in there was nothing to stop the Aussie from grabbing his fifth pole of the season with Lewis P2. Further down, Jenson had to start in P5. Could have been a lot worse.
Well Jenson well and truly mugged Webber and Vettel going into the first corner to get himself up to 3rd and then took Kubica for 2nd before a brief safety car period. When that was done the reigning world champion looked on course for one of his better results for a while...and then Vettel closed up and slammed right into him! Vettel may have been given a drive through for his blunder but that was of no use to Jenson who was out of the race! Not what he had in mind but not much could be done now. There is still time for Jenson to get back into a position where he can defend his title but he certainly can't afford too many more DNFs.
In the meantime Lewis took Webber for the lead almost immediately and was leading a McLaren 1-2...but a return to those heights would have to wait for another day after Jenson was taken out. In the meantime his pitstop was as smooth as you like - it would take more than that to knock him off the front. Might more wet stuff do the trick? Well it did give him some issues, he didn't come in for full wets and slid off the track briefly as a result! Certainly no other driver was able to challenge though. That meant that Lewis was able to bank his third win of the season and the 2008 world champion couldn't have returned from the summer holidays on better form.
So, with that Lewis moves up to lead the championship once again on 182 points with his new lead at three points. Further down, Jenson remains in 4th place on 147 points.
