SCOUSE LAME DUCK SHOT DEAD!

A horde descended on Old Trafford. They wore red but were grumbling in funny voices. It was the Scousers and their Champions League win in Bordeaux midweek was their first away win of the season. Result, the Anfield crew are languishing in midtable in the Premiership but United had to bear in mind that Arsenal were in worse trouble when they turned up on our patch! However with the midweek injury worries all sorted it was Gary at right back, Vidic and Rio in central defence and Giggsy at left mid though Ronaldo was feeling rough so Fletcher was at right mid.

Well from the start it was fairly clear who was going to win this match. The Scousers certainly had attacking runs early on but they had no class whatsoever and putting one up front and that one being Dick Kuyt rather than Peter Crouch was not Rafael Benitez's best idea of all time. Sooner or later the defence's lack of pace was going to be and that happened in the 39th minute when Giggsy lobed the goalie and Scholesy tapped the ball into the net. The Scouse commentator on Fanzone started praying for Peter Crouch.

The second half came and there were still no changes on either side and still no energy from the Scousers who seemed to think that long balls were going to get them out of trouble. Then in the 66th minute a Giggsy cross found Saha who the Scouse defence couldn't deal with. The Frenchman found Rio who danced past one defender before blasting it in for 2-0. The Scousers's prayers were answered when Crouch came on but like his teammates he was completely useless. What's gone wrong with the Scousers? Who cares?

That win was needed though to get us back on top of the Premiership after Chelsea beat Portsmouth 2-1 at Stamford Bridge the previous day! Andrei Shevchenko finally hit the net for the Blues with Michael Ballack getting the second for the allstars and Benjani Mwaruwari pulling one back for Pompey. The Blues are still level with us on points but we have a +4 goal difference advantage though the end of Shevcheno's goal drought could make things more interesting.

North of the border, Aberdeen got back to winning ways in the SPL. OK so it was only against bottom side Dundee United at Pittodrie but the 3-1 scoreline sounds good though given the Dons attacking formation it probably took longer to Darren Mackie's opener than Dons fans would have liked. Barry Nicolson made it two after half time and though the Tannadice crew pulled one back through a Barry Robson penalty, Nicolson finished them off soon afterwards.

That puts the Dons back up as far as sixth after St Mirren got beaten 3-2 by Rangers at St Mirren Park, leaving the Dons still just three points away from the European spots. As for the SPL title race well Celtic are surging through after beating Motherwell 2-1 at Celtic Park while Hearts got beaten 2-0 by Kilmarnock at Tynecastle thus widening the gap at the top to eight points and Hearts fans should be very worried about their second place as well.

As for midweek though, United start their defence of the Carling Cup.
