THE 2007/08 NBA SEASON SO FAR
Well it's coming up to midseason in the NBA and coming up to the Allstar break. A good time to have a quick run through of what's been happening so far. Luol, having gotten GB into Europe's Division A was hoping to pick up where he left off with the Bulls. Duncan, Parker and crew were were hoping to keep the O'Brien Trophy in San Antonio, Shaq and the Heat had other ideas but then again, so did the Suns, Mavs, a well upgraded Celtics side and even the Pistons!
We start with Luol's Bulls - they've had a messy season so far. They may have won their last game by heating the Heat in Miami but with the GB star having injury problems they come into All Star weekend with only a 21-31 record. That may be good enough for 3rd place in the Central division, well off the pace of the division leading Pistons at 39-13 and on a 10 game winning streak, the Cavs in second with a 29-23 record, having lost their last game to the Spurs.
Heading to the Northeast division well try this for size. For what must be the first time since the Larry Bird era, the Celtics have the best record in the Eastern Conference, 41-9! Kevin Garnett + Ray Allen + Paul Pierce seems to equal awesome! The Knicks still seem to be in a slump though on a 15-37 record that is no good to man nor beast and though the Sixers are on form it's the Raptors and Nets that are the main persuers of the Celts though they're lagging big time.
Heading down to the Southeast Division, well the Magic are leading down there with a 33-21 record. Dwight Howard's the main man even if that's not saying much in what is seemingly the weakest division in the NBA! Other than the Magic, 'none' of the other teams in the division are breaking .500! It's the Wizards in second, then the Hawks and then the Bobcats. The Heat are bringing up the rear with a 9-42 record. Heat? 9-42? Where's Shaq?
Well Shaq's gone to Phoenix, bailing out from the injury ridden Heat in exchange for Shaun Marion. Steve Nash + Shaq sounds out of this world. Do the Suns even need Shaq though? The big man hasn't played a game for Phoenix yet and already the Suns are leading the Pacific division with a 37-16 record. The Lakers, who now have Pau Gasol on board are giving them a close race for the division title and the Warriors aren't that far behind either in third with Baron Davis being the main man there.
The biggest surprise is in the South West division? Guess which team there is leading the entire Western Conference? It's 'none' of the Texan sides. In fact it's the Hornets - a franchise I have never seen on such form in either Charlotte or New Orleans! No player stands out on their current roster but they still have a 36-15 record with the Spurs the best of the rest and the Grizzlies the only side that's really off the pace with 14-38!
Finally we have the Northwest division. Well the Iversen-Anthony combo is certainly doing the business in Denver and they have a 32-20 record to prove it! However it's the Jazz that are topping the division with a 37-16 record! Carlos Boozer is the man on form there. The Blazers are the other side that are doing decently with Joel Freeland still playing with Spanish side Gran Canaria. The TWolves are bringing up the real on 12-41, completely out of it in the post Garmett era.
So, next stop, New Orleans for the All Star Game.
