I, ROBOT
This film starts with a run through of Asimov's three laws of robotics(which anyone who knew anything about this film would already know about) and an underwater teaser involving a robot rescuing someone from a car - which turns out to be a dream sequence from the mind of Will Smith's Del Spooner of Chicago PD.
The year is 2035. Humanity is generally reliant on robots for their domestic work. And a new batch of robots are about to be released to supposedly serve humanity, known as the NR-5s. Spooner does not like robots one bit though - particularly as an NR-5 calling itself 'Sonny' supposedly killed a big time robotics scientist. Straightforward matchup between Spooner and rogue robot right?
Wrong. Sonny has, amongst other things, been programmed with emotions, furthermore he does not obey the three laws of robotics. He won't automatically obey a human being, he is capable of killing a human being and potentially he may not be too good at self-preservation. But he is also disconnected from the network of 'US Robotics'. And even Spooner(having teamed up with another robotics scientist Susan Calvin) works out that this could mean that Sonny might not be the real bad guy. Particularly as a hologram of the late Alfred Lanning has been leaving Spooner hints about certain interpretations of 'the three laws'.
The result is a film that blasts along as various machines under a malign(or simply ultra-logical) influence attempt to kill Spooner and then take over the planet under the pretext of protecting humanity. Top class FX work(big up to Rainmaker) simply helps this film to become top of my list of DVD rental reccomendations.
